Bradenton's Village of the Arts

Bradenton's Village of the Arts has 35 local artists and is considered Florida's largest art community.

The area is identified by its collection of oddly colored houses, many of which have stores selling art, jewelry, ceramics, clothing collectibles books and more.

The neighborhood was not too long ago the worst area of Brandon, with a collection of crack houses and prostitutes.

Since the 1990s the area has undergone a tremendous recovery, thanks in part to the city's $10,000 matching grants for renovations of neighborhood houses.

Bradenton Farmers Market

Bradenton hosts a farmers market every Saturday in the winter from 9am to 1pm on Old Main Street in the heart of downtown.

This small market offers all kinds of produce, plants, flowers, arts, crafts, honey, breads, and prepared food.

The area, just south of the marina is a popular spot to get your groceries, have lunch, walk the dog, or people watch.

There is also live music and of course you can stop in the local restaurants and bars like the Lost Kangaroo.

McKechnie Field

McKechnie Field in Bradenton, just 30 or 40 minutes south of Tampa, is the off-season home of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It is here the Major League Buccos host their annual Spring Training and Minicamp.

In late 2009 the Pirates swapped Single A teams with Cincinnati and are moving the team from Sarasota here to Bradenton.

McKechnie Field is named after Pittsburgh native and Hall of Famer Bill McKechnie.

The stadium was built in 1923 and renovated in 1991-93.

The 6,500-seat venue had lights installed in 2007. This has been the training home of the Pirates since 1969.

Shunshine Skyway Bridge

The 5.5-mile long Sunshine Skyway Bridge carries I-275 and US-19 over the mouth of

Tampa Bay

connecting

St. Petersburg

and

Lido Beach Sarasota.

The bridge was constructed from 1982 to 1987 to replace the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge that was badly damaged in a boat collision in 1980.

The first bridge here had one span built in 1954 and the second span in 1969.

The bridge suffered tremendous damage in 1980 when the freighter MV Summit Venture crashed into a pier during a storm, casing a quarter mile of the bridge to collapse, and killing 35 people.

Bradenton beach

bradenton beach is located on anna maria island about 8 miles west of downtown bradenton. This beautiful gulf beach has a large public access and free parking. Bradenton beach is the best beach in manatee county.

Directions:

from downtown take SR 64 west to SR 789 then a couple miles south to bradenton beach. bradenton beach is located between the town of anna maria and longboat key.

confederate civil war memorial

located on the grounds of the old manatee county courthouse is the manatee county confederate civil war memorial.

This unusual monument is plain obelisk with engravings of famous confederate leaders on it's base.

Twin dolphin marina

the twin dolphin marina is a full service marina located on the river in downtown bradention.

Because of it's excellent location it is the best marina to dock at if you are traveling to bradenton by boat.

For visitors to downtown bradenton it is a nice stop to look at the beautiful boats docked there.

South florida museum

a very interesting place to visit in downtown bradenton is the south florida museum.

This is a combination natural history museum, aquarium, and planetarium. The museum focuses on ancient florida history and the aquarium has manatees on display.

The bishop planetarium has an interesting star and planet show. a great place to take children when in bradenton.
