Retained Fireman

Disney-Fire-Truck Everyone who knows me will no about my Fire Brigade, service, I worked as a Retained Fireman for Durham County Fire Brigade, Station B-18 Washington.

During the creation of the Tyne Wear Metropolitan Authority the Washington Station became, station S, or Station Sierra, when using the phonetic alphabet.

Picture below is another action shot, captured during a recent fire in Washington.

This particular photograph would form an ideal source of reference for a Fire Scene painting.

Fire Control

Disney-Fire-Truck I still remember those 600 plus fire calls I attended.

Usually I was the first into the Station after the alarm sounded.

We were summoned to the Fire Station, day or night, via a Pye fireman’s alerter, transmitting in the 147 MHz range.

Washington, during its era with Durham County, was known as Foxtrot 181, the control at Framwellgate Moor was M to L.f., Mobile to Lima Foxtrot.

I don’t remember but apparently Durham Fire Appliances, before they were given their own Radio system, would request a talk through using Police Radio.

Durham Police control was M to L.A... The procedure would be M to LA from Foxtrot 181, request talk through to M to LF.

Disney Epcot Fire Truck

Strange really how I remember all this information, after forty something years.

I remember sitting in the Fire car of an Officer, and listening out for his call sign, as a boy. Control would call him to advise of an incident requiring his attendance. These early introduction's to Emergency communications, were probabaly influential connections which led me into a career, a life long career, in Telecommunications.

I enjoy Ham Radio too, it is a very interesting hobby, I talk to people all over the world via morse code, and use the International Short Wave frequencies to do this.

Ham Radio operators often help out with communication's during natural disasters. Raynet is what this emergency system is called. Ham's also use their transceivers to talk to astronauts, on board the I.S.S. (International Space Station)

His call was Yankee 40.The gentlemans name was Mr. Hagan

Epcot to my delight had a large American Fire Truck parked just inside the entrance during one of our visits to Walt Disney World.
