Florida-University-Hotels.Attractions near University of Florida The University of Florida is located in Gainesville, Florida. It can be found just north of Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. There are many attractions located near the University and the surrounding areas.
Located within the area of the University, one will find the Florida Museum of Natural History, the Butterfly Rainforest, and the Harn Museum, all located on Hull Road. The Butterfly Rainforest is one of the Florida Museum of Natural History’s newest exhibits. It supports 80 different species of butterflies free-flying amongst the trees and flowers, while guests stroll along a winding path and cascading waterfalls. Going in a southwest direction, along Southwest Archer Road, there is the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens, Alley Katz Corner bowling alley, and the Regal Gainesville Stadium 14 movie theater. The Kanapaha Botanical Gardens consists of 62 acres and is home to the state’s largest bamboo display and the largest herb garden in the Southeast. Unique plants include the Chinese royal bamboo, giant Victoria water lilies and Asian snake arums. East of the University of Florida, the Hippodrome State Theatre can be found on Southeast 2nd Place while the Acrosstown Repertory Theater is located on South Main Street. There is also the Thomas Center Galleries and the Morningside Nature Center further east. There are a few historic sites in the area worth visiting. These include the Dudley Farm Historic Park, located on West Newberry Road; the Haile Kanapaha Plantation, located on Southwest Archer Road; the Micanopy Historical Society found on Northeast 1st Street; and the Kinnan Rawling Home on South Country Road. To the north is Goldhead Branch State Park on State Road 21. Of interest is the Haile Kanapaha Plantation with its “talking walls.” This cotton plantation is home to one of the few remaining antebellum homes in North Central Florida. Unique to this historic site is the step-back-in-time feeling created due to the Haile family writing on the walls of their home, over 12,500 words in all.
